A domestic cat can be not only a companion for an elderly person but also a source of emotional support. Veterinarians have named seven breeds that are distinguished by their calm nature, attachment to their owner, and relative ease of care.

This is reported by “Parade Pets.”

According to veterinarian Amy Warner, when choosing a pet for an elderly person, one must consider not only the animal’s temperament.

“You need to think about grooming needs, diet, and how much daily interaction the cat will require,” notes the expert.

Specialists explain that gentle and undemanding breeds are best suited for people who live alone or lead a quiet lifestyle.

What breeds are on the list

Veterinarians consider the Russian Blue one of the best breeds. It is calm, devoted to its owner, tolerates short periods of loneliness well, and does not require complex care.

The British Shorthair is also an excellent choice. It is gentle, likes to be near its owner, but at the same time is not overly intrusive. Its short coat practically requires no special grooming.

For more active individuals, experts recommend the Balinese cat. It is very sociable, intelligent, and quickly becomes attached to its owner. However, this breed needs toys and regular interaction.

The Bombay cat, known for its friendly character, is also on the list.

“This breed is an ideal pet for almost everyone. It is easy to care for and very affectionate,” emphasized Amy Warner.

Another recommendation is the Scottish Fold. They are known for their calm behavior, attachment to people, and ability to get along well with other pets.

For lovers of fluffy cats, veterinarians advise paying attention to the Birman cat.

“They are very gentle, sociable, and loving. Birmans dislike being left alone for long periods, so they are perfect for people who spend a lot of time at home,” explained veterinarian Julie Hunt.

The list is rounded out by the American Shorthair. It combines independence with a strong attachment to its owner, is easily trained, and is characterized by a balanced temperament.

Experts emphasize that even within the same breed, each cat’s personality can differ. That is why, when choosing a pet, one should consider not only breed recommendations but also the individual characteristics of a specific animal.

According to veterinarians, the main thing is that the cat matches its owner’s lifestyle. Only then will the pet become a true friend for many years.

Recall that strange cat behavior (knocking things over, scratching furniture, refusing food, loud meowing) usually has logical reasons: natural instincts, stress, unmet needs, or misinterpreting the animal’s signals. Expert Annie Valuska advises providing enough play, resources, reacting correctly to the behavior, and consulting a veterinarian for persistent changes.
