Dictator Bashar al-Assad sentenced to death: details

Syrian dictator and former president Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Moscow at the end of 2024, has been sentenced to death.

This decision was made due to the crimes he committed during the country’s civil war.

The verdict was issued on Tuesday, August 11, by the Criminal Court in Damascus. The court found Bashar al-Assad guilty of intentional homicide, and Atef Najib guilty of torture and intentional homicide.

The accused were tried in absentia.

According to the court’s findings, the crimes committed by Assad’s government in the Daraa province in 2011 constitute crimes against humanity.

Syria demands Russia extradite al-Assad

As a reminder, the new Syrian authorities, led by de facto leader Ahmed Sharra, are demanding that Russia extradite former dictator Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Moscow after rebels captured Damascus in December 2024.

This demand was made on January 28 during the first negotiations in Damascus with the Russian delegation since the regime’s overthrow. The delegation included Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Kremlin special representative Alexander Lavrentyev.

The new Syrian government emphasized that the restoration of relations with Moscow must take into account past mistakes, respect the will of the Syrian people, and serve their interests. Since Russian forces bombed Syrian cities during the civil war, the republic’s authorities are demanding concrete steps from Russia to restore trust, including compensation payments and participation in the country’s reconstruction.
