Небачені українські імена, що виникли під час війни: раніше їх не було

A rare name for a child is always a personal choice of the family. For some, it is connected to history, for others – to culture or family traditions, and for others, it becomes a way to preserve the memory of an important period of life.

The war has affected not only the daily lives of Ukrainians but also some family traditions. In particular, parents have started to more frequently seek unusual names for their children, imbuing them with special meaning. Among such options were names related to Ukrainian culture, music, national symbols, and even war events. According to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, during the full-scale war in Ukraine, children were registered with very rare names that were practically unheard of before. This is reported by the resource “Konkurent.”

Names Associated with War

Among boys, names like Yan-Javelin and Artur-Bayraktar emerged. In these names, parents used the designations of well-known weapons and the drone that became widely recognized by Ukrainians after the full-scale invasion began.

Unusual choices were also made for girls. Among the registered names were Javelina, Adelina-Javelina, and Javelina-Didem.

Evidently, for parents, such names became a kind of reflection of the historical period in which their children were born.

The Return of Rare Names

At the same time, not all unusual names were directly linked to the war. During this period, Ukrainian parents gave children such rarely used male names as Myroliub, Tristan, Ikhan, Umar, Tahir, Alidjan, Tengiz, Olgert, Chiprian, Eskinder, and Nathaniel.

Among the female names mentioned are Jasmine, Yasnarada, Kvitka, Glafyra, Dara, Nana, Barbara, Sladislava, Lyalya, and Meri-Mykhailyna.

The name Stefania deserves a special mention. Its popularity in Ukraine noticeably increased after the victory of the band “Kalush Orchestra” at Eurovision-2022 with the song “Stefania.” For many parents, this name became a symbol of Ukrainian culture and the country’s bright victory on the international stage.
