TikTok dismisses hundreds of content moderators due to artificial intelligence
TikTok has announced a reduction in its content moderation team workforce across the UK, shifting reliance to artificial intelligence (AI). This move reflects a broader shift in the social media sector, where major players like Meta and X are also transitioning from human moderators to automated systems. The details were reported by «Hlavkom», referencing The Wall Street Journal.
The restructuring will affect a team of 2,500 based in the UK, along with staff in Southern and Southeast Asia. Though precise figures remain undisclosed, insiders suggest hundreds will be affected.
TikTok representatives claim their AI systems currently identify and remove over 85% of content violating platform guidelines. This follows earlier reductions by ByteDance in moderation teams: late 2024 saw 500 employees let go in Malaysia, while July reports from ver.di union highlighted around 150 Berlin-based TikTok staff being replaced by AI models.
The UK staff reductions occurred shortly after the enactment of Britain’s Online Safety Act, which empowers authorities to penalize online platforms that fail to safeguard minors from harmful material.
Notably, the White House recently launched an official TikTok account aimed at amplifying President Donald Trump’s outreach efforts. However, shortly after its debut, the majority of the platform’s users responded with noticeable indifference.
In related news, TikTok restricted access to two accounts linked to sanctioned politician and former MP Yevgeny Murayev. The decision stemmed from repeated dissemination of pro-Russian propaganda and disinformation, which contravenes the platform’s policies.
