Ukrainian refugees in Poland must update their data in the PESEL UKR registry by August 31, 2026, to avoid losing temporary protection. However, this requirement applies to a specific category of citizens.
This is stated in a statement from the Polish government.
Who May Lose Temporary Status
According to the clarification, this concerns Ukrainians who received PESEL UKR:
-
without presenting a valid foreign passport. They received temporary protection solely based on an application or birth certificate,
-
after obtaining PESEL, they received a new foreign passport or changed their personal details,
-
they have children for whom PESEL was issued without a passport, and later the child obtained their own foreign document.
The Polish government warns that failure to update data may result in the loss of temporary protection from September 1, 2026, and consequently, the right to reside in the country.
Where to Update PESEL UKR
The data update procedure is carried out in person: you need to contact any Urzęd gminy or Urzęd miasta in Poland. You must bring the following documents:
-
a valid foreign passport;
-
if necessary, undergo re-identification and provide fingerprints.
It is not possible to update data remotely.
New Rules for Ukrainian Refugees in Europe — What is Known
Europe is preparing changes for Ukrainian refugees. The European Commission plans to update a document according to which, for entry into EU countries and obtaining temporary protection status, Ukrainians will have to provide a document confirming exemption from mobilization.
New accommodation rules for Ukrainians are in effect in Poland. From now on, most displaced persons will have to pay for housing rental themselves or move to the private sector. Such innovations may affect the elderly, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable categories.
