In the Ukrainian language, the name of the tree with bright red clusters sounds different from its Russian counterpart. If you are accustomed to saying “ryabina,” it’s worth remembering the Ukrainian equivalent – “horobyna.”

Why is there confusion?
The word “ryabina” is well-known to many Ukrainian speakers due to the Russian language. This is why it often appears in everyday speech.
At the same time, Ukrainian dictionaries have their own name – **horobyna**. In the academic “Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language,” the word “ryabina” is also recorded, but with the notations “colloquial, rare” and a reference to the word “horobyna.” This means that **the primary dictionary variant** is indeed “horobyna.”
Therefore, if you aim to adhere to modern literary Ukrainian, it is better to use the form “horobyna” in your speech.
How to decline the word “horobyna”
The noun “horobyna” is feminine. The stress falls on the second syllable: horobýna.
It is important to remember the declension forms:

Therefore, both sentences are correct:

The first case refers to the tree, the second – to its fruits.
This is the variant that should be used in modern Ukrainian speech. At the same time, it is important not to claim that the form “ryabina” is completely unknown to the Ukrainian language: the academic dictionary records it as a colloquial, rare variant meaning “the same as horobyna.”
