A precise strike from Ukrainian forward Oleksiy Kashchuk has ended the Kyiv club’s hopes of participating in the main round of the Conference League.

Kyiv’s “Dynamo” lost to Azerbaijan’s “Qarabag” in the return leg of the third qualifying round of the Conference League for the 2026/27 season. The match, held at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan, concluded with a 2:0 victory for the home team.

The “White-Blues” approached this encounter with a slim advantage following the first match, which ended with a 1:0 victory for the Ukrainian club.

However, at the very beginning of the return fixture, “Qarabag” restored parity in the two-legged tie. In the 12th minute, Abdellah Zoubir delivered a cross from the left side of the penalty area to the far post, where Matheus Silva’s volley attempt was unsuccessful, but Jali Muadhib scored from the rebound, sending the ball under the crossbar.

The first half thus concluded with a 1:0 lead for the Azerbaijani club. Immediately after the break, Kyiv had an excellent opportunity to score. In the 50th minute, Volodymyr Brazhko intercepted a pass from the “Qarabag” goalkeeper outside the opponent’s penalty area and took a weak shot towards the left post, but the goalkeeper parried it for a corner.

In the 62nd minute, “Dynamo” created another dangerous moment. Eduardo Guerrero found Vladyslav Dubinchak with a pass to the far side of the penalty area, and he found the net against “Qarabag,” but the referee flagged an offside.

Then, in the 69th minute, “Qarabag” scored their second goal against “Dynamo.” Ukrainian forward Oleksiy Kashchuk, positioned at the center of the goal area, finished off a low cross from Elvin Jafarguliyev from the left flank.

Consequently, “Qarabag” defeated “Dynamo” with an aggregate score of 2:1.

As a result, “Qarabag” advances to the play-off round of the Conference League qualifiers, where they will face the winner of the tie between “Twente” (Netherlands) and DAC 1904 (Slovakia). In the first leg, “Twente” comprehensively defeated DAC 1904 at home with a score of 6:0. For “Dynamo,” their European campaign for this season has concluded.

It is worth noting that both clubs began their European journey from the first qualifying round of the Europa League. “Dynamo” overcame Romanian side “Universitatea” in a penalty shootout (0:0, 0:0), while “Qarabag” decisively beat Icelandic club “Vestri” (3:0, 3:0).

In the second qualifying round of the Europa League, Kyiv twice lost to Greek team PAOK (2:3, 0:2), whereas the Azerbaijani club was defeated by Bulgarian team CSKA Sofia in a penalty shootout (0:0, 0:0).

As a reminder, two other Ukrainian clubs, LNZ Cherkasy and Polissya Zhytomyr, were previously eliminated from European competitions. Therefore, the sole representative of Ukraine in the European arena remains Shakhtar Donetsk, which secured a direct spot in the main round of the Champions League.
