SpaceX has agreed to reinstate Poland within the pan-European roaming zone for Starlink.
This was announced by Krzysztof Gawkowski, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs of Poland.
According to him, customers from Poland will be able to utilize the service under the same terms as those in other European countries. Gawkowski anticipates that the announced changes will be implemented promptly, followed by notification to the customers.
What preceded this
SpaceX had previously announced modifications to the terms of service for Starlink Roam. The company established a unified European region encompassing over 30 countries, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, France, Spain, Italy, Romania, and Norway. Poland was initially absent from this list.
This situation could have potentially worsened the conditions for Polish customers using Starlink during their travels abroad. Under the rules of the Roam Unlimited service, users are permitted to use the service outside their country of registration for a maximum of 30 days per trip.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radosław Sikorski, threatened to re-evaluate the country’s expenditures on Starlink satellite communication if Elon Musk did not comply. This pertains to the nearly $50 million annually that Poland allocates for Starlink terminals destined for Ukraine.
“Hey @elonmusk, you great man, stop discriminating against Polish Starlink users, or we will review our investment in your services at $50 million per year,” Sikorski posted on X.
This is not the first disagreement between Sikorski and Musk concerning Starlink. Last year, Musk responded to the Polish minister with “Умолкни, мелкий человек” (which translates to “Be quiet, little man”), after Sikorski stated that Warsaw might seek alternative satellite communication providers if Musk proved to be an unreliable partner.
