A senior Iranian official stated that there is a vast chasm between Washington’s desires and actual control over the Strait of Hormuz.

The Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, ridiculed statements by US President Donald Trump claiming that the Strait of Hormuz could allegedly become American territory. Rezaei took the helm of Iran’s key security body on August 10th.

In a post on X, Rezaei asserted that the gap between the US inability to open the Strait of Hormuz and Washington’s claims of ownership over it is even greater than the approximately 7,000 miles separating Washington from the strait itself.

“Welcome to the post-American order in the Persian Gulf,” Rezaei wrote.

He appended a map to his post comparing the distance from the Strait of Hormuz to the US and Iran.

The statement came after Donald Trump published a map of the Strait of Hormuz on Truth Social on August 18th with the inscription “NEW U.S. Territory”. Subsequently, the American president told reporters that he liked the idea of declaring the strait US territory and claimed that Washington had “full control” over it.

Meanwhile, the situation surrounding the strategic waterway remains contentious. Trump insists that the strait is open, yet navigation through it is significantly restricted. Tehran declares it will not fully open it until the US fulfills a number of conditions, including regarding sanctions, frozen Iranian assets, and the American blockade.

Recall that Trump stated his intention to declare the Strait of Hormuz United States territory after the war with Iran concludes. Iran has categorically rejected such claims and stated that the strait will remain closed until Washington meets Tehran’s conditions.
