A federal judge in the U.S. has reversed a policy established by President Donald Trump’s administration that suspended the issuance of immigrant visas to citizens of 75 nations worldwide.

This is reported by CNN.

Federal Judge Jeanette Vargas, from the Southern District of New York, ruled that the restrictions contravene U.S. law and exceed the authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The policy was introduced in January 2026. It stipulated the suspension of immigrant visa issuance for nationals of 75 countries – representing nearly 40% of the world’s nations. The list notably included Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Haiti, Somalia, Iran, and Russia.

The State Department explained the decision as a necessary measure to prevent individuals from entering the U.S. who, according to the administration, might become reliant on public social assistance.

However, the judge emphasized that American immigration law requires an individual assessment of each applicant – specifically their financial status, age, health, professional skills, and family circumstances. The ban, in effect, allowed for visa rejections based solely on nationality.

The court also invalidated decisions to deny visa issuance if they were made exclusively under this policy. This could necessitate a review of thousands of applications.

The Trump administration has the right to appeal the court’s decision.
