The creation of a European anti-ballistic defense system might be disadvantageous for the US, as it could compete with American Patriot complexes.
This opinion was expressed by aviation expert Bohdan Dolintse in a comment to “24 Kanal”.
According to the expert, competition with the United States could become one of the obstacles to the development of the Ukrainian and European Freyja program. The new system could potentially be much more affordable than American equivalents, largely due to the lower cost of interceptor missiles.
Dolintse noted that one interceptor missile for Patriot costs approximately $3 million to $5 million, with its production limited to about 800 units per year. Meanwhile, the US has been trying for many years to create a system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles using ammunition costing up to $1 million, but has not yet achieved the desired result.
“The emergence of such a solution in Europe could change the situation, as it would be one of the most economically effective anti-ballistic complexes in the world,” emphasized Dolintse.
In his view, in terms of price-performance ratio, the European system could compete even with the Russian S-400. The expert suggests that a cheaper complex could potentially displace Russian systems from arms markets and attract countries that previously purchased American Patriots.
The cost of a Patriot system, including missiles and launchers, could exceed $1 billion, whereas the European complex, according to the expert’s estimates, might cost approximately half as much.
As a reminder, 13 European defense companies have already joined the development of the Freyja air defense system. Fire Point expects to complete the creation of the first functional interceptor by mid-2027.
