Against the backdrop of a record heatwave in Europe, experts are urging people to perform a quick refrigerator test using a simple piece of paper. They explain that due to the heat, compressors have to work much harder, so any damage to the door seal leads to significant cold loss. This simple trick helps to detect leaks in the unit in a timely manner, maintain food freshness, and reduce exorbitant electricity bills.

How the paper test works
To check if your refrigerator door is functioning correctly, all you need is a standard A4 sheet of paper. Place it against the rubber seal and close the door as tightly as possible. Then, gently try to pull the edge of the paper.
“When you try to pull the paper out, you should feel some resistance; if it slides out easily, the door seal may need replacing,” explained Salah San, Head of Product Management at Beko.
What to do in case of a malfunction
If the paper doesn’t stay in place, it’s not necessary to immediately buy a new seal or call a technician. Experts emphasize that the most common reason for a poor seal is simple dirt or accumulated grease. To resolve the issue, it is sufficient to thoroughly wipe the seal and the door frame with a soft cloth using warm water and a mild detergent.
“If the seal has hardened over time, using a small amount of warm water or carefully applying heat from a hairdryer can help restore its flexibility,” explain representatives from Seal Company.
Regular cleaning of the seal with a white vinegar solution not only improves grip but also significantly extends the lifespan of the parts. This will ensure stable cold inside the unit, even during the most intense summer heat.
