On May 27th, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution to institute a new holiday – the Day of Ukrainian Music. Lawmakers have already designated a specific date for this celebration and explained its connection to the iconic “Chervona Ruta” festival.

This information is available on the parliament’s website.

A total of 292 People’s Deputies voted in favor of resolution No. 15053 concerning the establishment of the Day of Ukrainian Music. The document mandates its annual observance on the third Saturday of September. The purpose of this holiday is to preserve the memory of the 1989 “Chervona Ruta” festival as a pivotal event in the history of Ukrainian music and to honor the contributions of Ukrainian artists to the development of national culture.

The Rada emphasized that this initiative is intended to support Ukrainian performers and music industry professionals who are shaping the nation’s contemporary cultural landscape. Furthermore, it is designed to reinforce cultural resistance in the context of the Russian Federation’s armed aggression and to promote the consolidation of the Ukrainian cultural environment, devoid of Russian influence.

“On the international stage, the Day of Ukrainian Music is viewed as a significant instrument of Ukraine’s cultural diplomacy,” the parliament’s website states.

The selection of the celebration date is deliberate. It was in September 1989 that the “Chervona Ruta” festival first took place, marking a landmark event for Ukrainian culture and contemporary music. The inaugural festival ran from September 17th to 24th and is historically recognized as the first regular youth festival of independent Ukraine.

Oleksandr Sanchenko, head of the subcommittee on the music industry of the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, highlighted that contemporary Ukrainian music is not merely an artistic phenomenon but also a crucial component of the nation’s information security and cultural front.

According to him, the concept for establishing the Day of Ukrainian Music originated from individuals within the music sector, notably from the Ukrainian Copyright Agency.

Incidentally, on May 21st, Ukraine celebrated Vyshyvanka Day, which has emerged as a symbol of unity, strength, and resilience during the war. Ukrainian stars and public figures traditionally participated in the festivities, sharing their attire and well wishes. Volodymyr and Olena Zelenska remarked that Ukrainians today are embroidering their own destiny through their lives and struggles.
