The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, identified three key factors that could compel the Russian leadership to agree to an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine. The Finnish leader is convinced that the sole obstacle to initiating a peace process is Russia’s unwillingness to halt hostilities.
The politician discussed the necessary steps to end the Russian-Ukrainian war in an interview with “My — Ukraine.”
The Sole Obstacle to Peace
According to Alexander Stubb, the process of ending the war should consist of two distinct stages, the first of which is an unconditional ceasefire. Only after the weapons fall silent can the parties move on to full-fledged peace negotiations and discussions about a long-term vision for the overall situation. Currently, Ukraine and its allies are actively calling for a cessation of hostilities, but Russia remains the only party categorically unwilling to agree to this.
“Remember when President Trump came to power, he spoke of peace through strength? One can argue that Ukraine is currently in quite a strong position,” noted the Finnish president.
Three Steps to a Ceasefire
In response to the question of how to force the Russian dictator to change his stance, Stubb outlined three main conditions that must operate concurrently:

Western partners must continue robust military and financial support for Ukraine, as well as fully ensure its energy needs ahead of a difficult winter.

The international community must continuously increase pressure on Moscow through new sanctions, maximizing the cost of waging this war for the aggressor.

The third factor directly depends on Ukraine itself and its ability to convince Russia that ending the armed conflict is in Russia’s interests.
“According to the theory of victory, when a larger aggressor attacks a smaller one, the smaller country wins if it preserves its independence and sovereignty. I am confident that Ukraine will achieve this,” concluded the leader of Finland.
It is worth recalling that Ukraine, in collaboration with representatives from the USA and European officials, has developed a new package of proposals for ending the Russian-Ukrainian war. The plan includes a ceasefire, mutual withdrawal of troops from the current front line, and the creation of a buffer zone.
