NATO has stated that it is closely monitoring Russia’s military activities, particularly its capabilities for long-range strikes and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. This is how the Alliance responded to reports about a network of Russian bases from which strike drones could potentially be launched towards NATO member states.

This information was reported by “Interfax-Ukraine,” citing an official at the Alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.

“NATO is closely observing Russia’s military activities, including its long-range strike capabilities and drone usage,” the source told the agency.

According to the official, the Alliance possesses the necessary plans, forces, and tools to deter aggression and defend against potential threats.

NATO also emphasized that it is strengthening its defenses on the eastern flank and regularly exercises its ability to rapidly augment land forces in this region.

Furthermore, the Alliance is expanding its counter-drone capabilities. The official recalled the NATO Drone Edge initiative, announced by the Allies at the summit in Ankara in 2026.

Under this initiative, NATO countries plan to invest approximately $40 billion over five years in drone countermeasures and to quintuple the number of trained drone operators in their armed forces by the end of 2027.

“Allies continue to bolster resilience and improve the tools at our disposal, ensuring the Alliance remains prepared to deter and defend every ally,” the official stated.

What is known about probable secret Russian bases?

Earlier, The Telegraph reported that Russia had established a network of secret bases with launch pads for long-range strike drones.

As part of its investigation, the publication claimed to have identified 10 such sites with recently equipped launch pads for modern Russian drones.

According to The Telegraph, some of these bases are already being used for strikes against Ukraine. Their proximity to the Ukrainian border allows Russia to conduct large-scale attacks with a significant number of drones.

At the same time, the publication believes these facilities could pose a long-term threat to NATO countries, as parts of the Alliance’s territory are potentially within the reach of Russian long-range drones.

Analysts cited by The Telegraph have also noted the rapid development of Russian drone manufacturing technologies. In the event of a direct conflict, such systems could potentially be employed against European nations.

In particular, according to the publication’s assessment, the location of some of the identified bases allows Russian strike drones to have sufficient range for a potential strike on Warsaw.

We also recall that Russia has intensified its naval presence in the Baltic Sea, deploying two Northern Fleet ships there.
