For the first time in several years, Ukraine has managed to seize the initiative on the battlefield, reclaiming more territory than Russian forces are capturing. However, this window of opportunity may only remain open for the next six to nine months. During this period, Kyiv can leverage its recent military successes as a crucial bargaining chip in future discussions with Moscow.
This assessment comes from The Hill, citing military analysts and Ukrainian commanders.
According to expert evaluations, the conflict’s trajectory is gradually shifting in Ukraine’s favor. George Barros, an analyst at the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), noted that it is the first time since 2023 that Ukrainian troops have been regaining more territory than the Russian army is occupying.
The ISW attributes this achievement to the depletion of Russian forces, the effective deployment of drones, and innovative tactical approaches by the Ukrainian command.
Experts observe that Russia is facing increasing difficulties in sustaining large-scale offensive operations, while Ukrainian forces have become more adept at disrupting the enemy’s logistics and command structures.
Drones Played a Decisive Role
A pivotal factor in the changing front-line situation has been Ukraine’s dominance in drone technology.
Anatol Lieven, a senior fellow at the Quincy Institute, stated that Ukrainian drones have significantly expanded the “kill zone” around the front lines, making any movement of Russian troops exceedingly perilous.
He explained that the Russian army is increasingly unable to muster sufficient manpower and armored vehicles to breach Ukrainian defenses.
Barros also emphasized that the turning point began to form as early as late 2025, when Ukrainian forces initiated a systematic campaign to destroy Russian radars, electronic warfare systems, air defense units, and other assets responsible for air superiority.
The Next 6-9 Months Could Determine the War’s Outcome
Analysts caution that Ukraine’s current advantage is not guaranteed to be long-lasting.
George Barros described the present situation as a “rare and fleeting opportunity” that Kyiv and its allies must capitalize on immediately.
He expressed uncertainty about the sustainability of these advantages over the next nine months, underscoring the particular importance of international support for Ukraine at this juncture.
A similar assessment was voiced by Andriy Biletsky, commander of the 3rd Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In an interview with Reuters, he declared that the upcoming six to nine months will be a decisive period in the war.
According to Biletsky, Russian forces are experiencing an increasingly acute shortage of personnel and are no longer capable of advancing at the pace they did a year ago.
Battlefield Successes as Negotiating Leverage
The Hill points out that the current shift in the battlefield landscape presents Ukraine with a crucial diplomatic opportunity.
If Kyiv can consolidate and build upon its successes in the coming months, it could significantly strengthen Ukraine’s position in potential peace negotiations with Russia.
This is precisely why the Ukrainian leadership is actively urging allies to increase military aid. Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to the U.S. President and Congress for enhanced supplies of Patriot systems and air defense munitions, in anticipation of Russia’s preparation for a new wave of aerial attacks.
According to sources interviewed by the publication, the upcoming months could be pivotal not only for the situation on the front lines but also for shaping the conditions for a potential conclusion to the war. If the current advantage can be translated into further successes, Ukraine will gain considerably stronger leverage to achieve peace on terms favorable to itself.
Russia-Ukraine Negotiations: What’s Known
It is worth recalling that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, the Russian Federation, and the United States are not ongoing, as they have not yielded results.
Concurrently, Russia is escalating threats against Ukraine while simultaneously attempting to draw the U.S. back into negotiations to end the war.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga has asserted that Ukraine and the European Union possess sufficient leverage to expedite the end of the war with Russia. He believes that the current moment calls for the utilization of these opportunities.
Previously, the Washington Post noted that Russia’s war against Ukraine, initiated by Vladimir Putin, has reached a situation of strategic “zugzwang” for the Kremlin, where any further move only exacerbates their position.
