The Armed Forces of Ukraine are exploring several technological approaches to counter Russian jet-powered drones. Specifically, the focus is on interceptor drones, aircraft-type platforms, and cost-effective SMART missiles.
This was announced by the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Andriy Lebedenko, during a briefing, as reported by UNIAN.
According to Lebedenko, one of the promising countermeasures involves interceptor drones capable of operating at the same altitudes and speeds as Russian jet drones.
“We are developing aircraft-type platforms that will also carry onboard weaponry, enabling them to maneuver at speeds from 300 to 700 km/h at the altitudes where the jet-powered ‘Shaheds’ operate,” he stated.
The Deputy Commander-in-Chief emphasized that such platforms can be scaled due to their economic viability.
He noted that these technologies may be considerably less expensive and more effective than traditional anti-aircraft missile assets.
Additionally, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are examining the feasibility of employing inexpensive SMART missiles designed to intercept aerial targets up to an altitude of 6 kilometers.
“If they prove effective, these options will be combined,” Lebedenko remarked, commenting on the prospects of utilizing various means to combat Russian jet drones.
It is recalled that Russian jet drones can reach speeds of up to 600 km/h. The Air Force has explained why intercepting them is becoming increasingly challenging.
