In Poland, the necessity of a serious discussion regarding the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles directly over Ukraine’s territory has been voiced. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country, Radosław Sikorski, responded with this initiative to political controversies concerning the transfer of additional air defense systems to Kyiv.

Discussion Surrounding the Defense of Ukrainian Skies
In response to criticism from former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki regarding the inadmissibility of transferring further Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, the head of Polish diplomacy emphasized the critical situation. He highlighted that enemy ballistic missiles are constantly flying towards Ukrainian cities, for which there is currently no reliable defense, leading to an increasing number of civilian casualties.
According to the official, the Polish public should consider whether it would be more effective to neutralize the threat before it crosses their border. The question of destroying Russian aerial targets over Ukraine, rather than awaiting their arrival over Poland, is exceptionally important and requires a professional approach.
At the same time, Sikorski strictly cautioned politicians against utilizing this sensitive security issue for inter-party rivalry. Decisions of such magnitude must be made solely with national security in mind, not for political gains.
Private Defense Sector and Relations with the RF
Regarding the topic of the defense industry, the minister unexpectedly agreed with Morawiecki that private companies can operate extremely effectively for the benefit of the army. He cited global giants like Boeing and Lockheed Martin as examples, as well as the Ukrainian private sector, which, due to rapid feedback from the front lines, successfully produces modern drones and long-range missiles.
Concerning the opposition’s calls to expel Russian diplomats from Warsaw after the recent incident with a falling missile, Sikorski responded with utmost firmness. He explained that the resolutions adopted by the Sejm do not override the Vienna Convention; therefore, if politicians truly desire this, they must honestly declare their readiness to be the first in the EU and NATO to completely sever diplomatic relations with Russia.
US Sanctions as a Tool of Coercion
While assessing the prospects for achieving a ceasefire after Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s meeting with Donald Trump, the Polish Foreign Minister clearly outlined the necessary strategy for the international community. He is convinced that the key factor should be strong pressure from the United States precisely on the aggressor nation, rather than attempts to force concessions from Ukraine.
A viable instrument for such coercion could be the adoption of a new US bill named in honor of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. This document establishes a solid legal basis for imposing unprecedented economic restrictions against Moscow.
Specifically, the initiative authorizes the US President to set tariffs of up to 100% for the five largest buyers of Russian energy resources, and it also strikes a significant blow to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. Furthermore, the bill envisages a substantial expansion of sanctions pressure on Iran for its cooperation with the aggressor.
Currently, for many allied countries, the customs duty hovers around 10-15%, while such restrictions have not yet existed for Russia, leaving significant room for action. In Sikorski’s opinion, after taking such steps, international negotiators should visit Kyiv more often, rather than making constant pilgrimages to the Russian capital.
It is recalled that in recent weeks, Russian forces have intensified missile strikes on Ukraine, likely to capitalize on a critical deficit of air defense systems. Experts warn that the most difficult winter since 2022 awaits us, as Putin will again attempt to freeze Ukraine.
